Netflix Party Games: How They Work, and How to Play Without Netflix
Netflix Just Signed Off on Our Whole Idea
Netflix now runs party games on the TV. Open Netflix, pick a game from the Games row, everyone scans a QR code, and each phone becomes a controller. If that sounds familiar, it is exactly how lesury works — and how Jackbox worked before either of us. When the biggest streaming service on the planet builds the same thing, the format is clearly not a fad.
This post covers what Netflix offers, what it asks of you, and where to go if you want the same kind of night without it. Full disclosure up front: we built lesury, so read the comparison with that in mind. We have tried to keep it fair — including the parts where Netflix wins.
What Is in the Netflix Party Games Lineup
| Game | What you do | Players |
|---|---|---|
| Boggle Party | Find words in a letter grid before the timer runs out | Up to 8 |
| Pictionary: Game Night | Draw on your phone while everyone else guesses | |
| Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends | Everyone but one player knows the secret word — give hints, then vote on who is faking it | 3–6 |
| LEGO Party | A collection of competitive mini-games | |
| Tetris Time Warp | Tetris, built for a group | |
| Dead Man's Party: A Knives Out Game | A murder-mystery party game | |
| The Jackbox Party Essentials | A selection of Jackbox games |
Netflix reshuffles its games regularly, so treat this as a snapshot from September 2026 rather than a permanent list.
How Netflix Party Games Work
- Open Netflix on a supported smart TV or streaming device — or on netflix.com in a browser.
- Find the Games row, choose a game and press Play game.
- Everyone scans the QR code on the screen with a phone or tablet.
- The TV shows the game; the phones are the controllers.
The games come with a Netflix subscription — no ads, no in-app purchases. The catch is simply that you need the subscription, and someone has to be signed in to Netflix on the screen you are playing on. If you want the longer story of why this phone-plus-screen setup works so well, we wrote a whole post on phone-as-controller games.
What Netflix Does Well
- Famous names. Everyone already knows how Boggle and Pictionary work, so nobody has to explain the rules to Grandma.
- No extra cost if you already pay. If Netflix is on your TV anyway, the games are just there.
- Big-brand polish. Licensed games from well-funded studios look the part.
It is not flawless. The AV Club reported a phone that kept losing its connection to the TV, and a delay between phone and screen that made faster games feel sluggish. Word and drawing games suffer far less from that than action games do — a useful rule for any phone-controller game, ours included.

Liked a Netflix Game? Here Is the lesury Match
Boggle Party → Word Squeeze
Same itch, different shape. Word Squeeze puts 10 letters on the screen and gives everyone 90 seconds to build as many words as they can. Everyone shares the same letters, and longer words score more — so stop typing "cat" and think harder. 1–10 players.
Pictionary: Game Night → Sketch-It
Sketch-It is draw-and-guess: one player draws on their phone, the drawing appears on the big screen, and everyone else races to guess it. Artistic talent optional, confidence mandatory. 2–12 players.
Party Crashers → Take or Fake (or Think Sync)
Honest answer: we have no exact twin — no lesury game hides the secret word from one player. If what you loved was reading your friends’ faces, try Take or Fake: a bizarre statement appears, the room argues about it, and everyone votes in secret on whether it is real. If it was the clue-giving you loved, Think Sync has one player at a time sending a one-word clue while everyone else secretly picks the words they think it means.
LEGO Party → Boomber, Snap It or Tic Toe Crash
For short, loud, competitive rounds. In Boomber everyone secretly plans two moves and drops a bomb, then all moves play out at once. Snap It is pure reflexes — tap the matching symbol on your phone before anyone else. Tic Toe Crash is tic-tac-toe where everyone picks a square at the same time, and if two of you pick the same one, it burns.
The Jackbox Party Essentials → Our Jackbox Guide
Jackbox deserves its own post, so it has one: free Jackbox alternatives, with a game-by-game list of what to play instead.
Tetris Time Warp and Dead Man's Party → Stick With Netflix
We do not have a falling-blocks game or a murder mystery. If those are why you are here, Netflix is your answer, and we will not pretend otherwise.
So Which One Should You Use?
- You already pay for Netflix and it is on this TV: try theirs first. Boggle and Pictionary are easy wins with a mixed crowd.
- No Netflix, or not on this screen — a friend’s place, the office, a holiday rental, a classroom projector: open lesury in any browser and you are playing in 30 seconds.
- Your group has played every classic to death: lesury games are originals, so nobody walks in with a head start.
Or use both — the setup is identical, so switching between them costs nothing. Nobody at the party cares which logo is in the corner, as long as the phones light up and somebody loses dramatically.
Want the phone-controller party night without the subscription? Open lesury on any screen, scan the QR code, and start playing in 30 seconds. No subscription, no downloads, no accounts.
Frequently asked questions
How do Netflix party games work?
Open Netflix on a supported smart TV or streaming device, or on netflix.com in a browser, find the Games row and start a game. Everyone scans the QR code on the screen with a phone, the TV shows the game and the phones act as controllers. The games come with a Netflix subscription, with no ads or in-app purchases.
Can I play party games like Netflix’s without a Netflix subscription?
Yes. lesury is free and needs no account: open it in any browser on a TV, laptop or projector, scan the QR code and play in about 30 seconds. It has games in similar styles, such as Word Squeeze for Boggle fans and Sketch-It for Pictionary fans, with up to 12 players depending on the game.
Which lesury game is like Boggle Party or Pictionary on Netflix?
Word Squeeze matches Boggle Party: everyone gets the same 10 letters and 90 seconds to build words, and longer words score more. Sketch-It matches Pictionary: one player draws on their phone, the drawing appears on the big screen and everyone else races to guess it.
What do I need to play Netflix party games?
You need a Netflix subscription and someone signed in to Netflix on the screen you are playing on, either a supported smart TV or streaming device, or netflix.com in a browser. Players then join with a phone or tablet by scanning the QR code. Without a subscription on that screen, a free browser option like lesury works instead.
