Dobble Online: Free Spot It Alternatives to Play With Friends

October 12, 2026·6 min read

Why Dobble Is Hard to Play Online

Dobble (sold as Spot It! in the US) is one of the best quick party games ever made: two cards, one matching symbol, first to shout it wins the card. It takes thirty seconds to explain and it turns grown adults into screaming goblins.

It is also a physical card game. You need the deck, and you need everyone around the same table. If your friends are in another city, or you left the tin at home, you are out of luck. So here is what you can play instead, and an honest note on what each option is good at.

The Short Version

  • Everyone in the same room: the real Dobble deck is still the best version.
  • Friends on a video call, or a room without the deck: Snap It (ours) runs free in the browser. Share one screen, everyone taps on their own phone.
  • Want to try other browser versions: Board Game Arena lists a Dobble-style game you can play in the browser with a free account.

1. The Real Dobble or Spot It! Deck

The original: 55 round cards, eight symbols on each, and any two cards share exactly one symbol. You flip cards in pairs and the first person to name the shared symbol takes the card. The box lists 2 to 8 players, and the rules are tiny. If you are all in one room and you own it, play this.

2. Snap It (Free, Phones and One Shared Screen)

Full disclosure: we built this one. Snap It is the Dobble idea rebuilt for a screen. A card appears on the big screen, each player sees their own eight symbols on their phone, and exactly one of them matches the card. First correct tap wins the round. A wrong tap locks you out for a couple of seconds, and a tie goes to sudden death.

It is free, runs in the browser, and needs no download or account. One person opens it, everyone else scans the QR code. It works for 1 to 10 players, and because the host only needs a screen, you can run it on a video call: share your screen, and everyone taps on their own phone. The host picks one of three symbol sets (Classic, Nature or Tech) and the game length.

What it is not: it is not the card game with the same artwork and the shouting across the table. You tap instead of grabbing a card, and that is the trade-off for being able to play when you are not in the same room.

3. Board Game Arena

Board Game Arena is a large site of browser board games, and it lists a Dobble-style game. Everyone plays on their own device, you need a free account, and real-time games work best on a steady connection. Check its current listing before you plan an evening around it, since what is available there changes.

What About Dobble Apps?

Searching your phone's app store for Dobble or Spot It! will show phone versions. We have not tested them, and availability and pricing vary by country and change often, so we are not listing any here. If you try one, check whether it supports playing with friends on separate phones, because many card-game apps are solo or pass-the-phone only.

Why There Is Always Exactly One Match

The deck is not shuffled at random. It is built from a piece of maths called a finite projective plane: with eight symbols per card, the full set is 57 cards, arranged so that any two cards share exactly one symbol. Never zero, never two. The physical Dobble box ships 55 of them. Snap It uses all 57.

It also means the match is always there. If you cannot find it, the match exists and you are the problem.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play Dobble online for free?

Yes. Snap It on lesury is a free, browser-based spot-the-match game in the same spirit as Dobble. One person opens it on a screen, everyone else scans a QR code and plays on their phone. There is no download and no account, and it works for 1 to 10 players.

Can you play Dobble over a video call?

The physical cards cannot be played that way, but Snap It can. The host shares their screen on the call so everyone sees the shared card, and each player taps the matching symbol on their own phone. It works for friends in different places and needs no download.

How does Dobble work, and why is there always one match?

Each Dobble card has eight symbols, and any two cards share exactly one symbol. The deck is built from a piece of maths called a finite projective plane, so the match is never missing and never doubled. The first player to spot and name the shared symbol takes the card or wins the round.

What is the difference between Dobble and Spot It?

They are the same game under different names. Dobble is the name used in Europe and many other countries, and Spot It! is the name used in the US. Both use round cards with eight symbols each, where any two cards share exactly one symbol.
